Probably a homo novus; master of the mint, AD 8 cos. suff. (Degrassi, FCIR, 6). He participated around AD 9 in military operations under Vibius Postumus in Dalmatia (Vell. Pat. 2,116,3). In AD 15 a legate in Germania under Germanicus; he was responsible for the protection of the Rhine bank during the campaign against the Chatti; for this he received triumphal decorations (Tac. Ann. 1,56; 72). Participated in 16 in the trial against Libo Drusus (Tac. Ann. 2,32,2). Proconsul of Africa from 18 to 21, accompanied by his son A. [II 2]. He conducted long-drawn-out battles against the Numidian leader Tacfarinas; therefore, the province's troops were strengthened by a legion in the spring of 21 (Tac. Ann. 3,9,1; 21). Tacitus described him as the model of military discipline (Tac. Ann. 3,21). It is possible that he received triumphal decorations a second time (Tac. Ann. 4,23,1). In 24 he accused his son-in-law of murder (Tac. Ann. 4,22). In 28 he fought as legate of the army of Lower Germany without success against the Frisians and was clearly criticized by Tacitus (Tac. Ann. 4,73,1). It is uncertain if he was legate up to 34 [1; 2. 73 ff.]. His daughters were Apronia [1] and [2].
