    Remark :titel: As the source mentions Alexander subduing the land on 'this side of the Euphrates', we can only assume it was meant to be the western side of the river. This seems plausible due to the fact that Alexander came from the West and Dareius, who fled east, can be understood as still holding the other side of the river.
    long-term consequence: This action of Alexander leads to the Battle of Gaugamela. This is mentioned later in the paragraph.
