Translation :Wherefore sore repentance fell upon the Athenians, and a longing desire for Cimon, defeated as they were on the confines of Attica, and expecting as they did a grievous war with the coming of spring.

Edition :Plutarch. Plutarch's Lives. with an English Translation by. Bernadotte Perrin. Cambridge, MA. Harvard University Press. London. William Heinemann Ltd. 1916. 3.

Remark :topology: By the defeat at the Attic border the battle of Tanagra is meant (see Plut. Per. 10.1-2).
long-term consequence: Considering the defeat and the imminent war the Athenians regret their banishment of Cimon (Plut. Per. 10.2). Therefore Perikles issues a decree which recalls him (Plut. Per. 10.3).
