    Original Text :αἱ γὰρ πόλεις ἐπολέμουν τὸν περὶ Πριήνης πόλεμον, καὶ κρατοῦντες οἱ Σάμιοι, παύσασθαι τῶν Ἀθηναίων κελευόντων καὶ δίκας λαβεῖν καὶ δοῦναι παρ᾽ αὐτοῖς, οὐκ ἐπείθοντο.
     
    Translation :For the two cities were waging their war for the possession of Priene, and the Samians were getting the better of it, and when the Athenians ordered them to stop the contest and submit the case to arbitration at Athens, they would not obey.

    long-term consequence: Because the Samians refuse to end their war with Miletus as the Athenians demanded, Pericles starts a campaign against them (Plut. Per. 24.1 and 25.1).
