Translation :In the battle that ensued the Samians were victorious, taking many of their enemy captive, and destroying many of their ships, so that they commanded the sea and laid in large store of such necessaries for the war as they did not have before.

Edition :Plutarch. Plutarch's Lives. with an English Translation by. Bernadotte Perrin. Cambridge, MA. Harvard University Press. London. William Heinemann Ltd. 1916. 3.

Remark :perpetrator: The perpetrators are Samian.
motive: Melissus is emotionally motivated, because he despises the small number of ships and the inexperience of the Athenian generals (Plut. Per. 26.2).
long-term consequence: See the English citation.
