Original Text :Interim Nortmanni Meldis civitatem obsidione vallant, machinas instruunt, aggerem conportant ad capiendam urbem. Quibus viriliter resistit Teutbertus comes, donec interiit cum omnibus prope bellatoribus. Mortuo itaque comite, episcopus Sigemundus timore perculsus iussit lapidibus obfirmari portas civitatis. Cumque hi qui infra civitatem erant inclusi, obsidione pertesi, fame attenuati, mortibus etiam suorum nimis afflicti, cernerent ex nulla parte sibi auxilium adfuturum, cum Nortmannis sibi notos agere coeperunt, ut data civitate vivi sinerentur abire. Quid plura? Refertur ad multitudinem, et sub spetie pacis obsides dant. Reserantur portae, fit via Christianis, ut egrediantur, delegatis bis qui eos quo vellent ducerent.

Remark :long-term consequence: The Bishop first orders the gates to be walled up after the death of many defenders and Count Teutbert, but hunger and losses lead the people to negotiate. They are granted free passage, but are betrayed and captured. The Northmen burn the city afterwards.
Notes :The defending Count Teutbert and many others die during the siege: "Northmen kill Count Teutbert and most defenders during the siege of Meaux."
For the capture of the townsfolk after they were allowed to leave, refer to: "Northmen capture Bishop Sigmund and the population of Meaux, breaking their promise of free passage."
