    Original Text :Νικίας ταῖς μὲν ναυσὶν ἡττώμενος τὸ πρῶτον ὅμως ἐξέωσε καὶ κατέδυσε πολλὰς τῶν πολεμίων, πρὸς δὲ τὸ πεζὸν οὐκ ἔφθασε βοηθῶν,
     
    Translation :With his fleet, though vanquished at first, he yet succeeded in repulsing the enemy and sank many of their ships

    Remark :perpetrator: The Athenians are attacked by sea and land at the same time. Therefore Nicias' effort to sink many ships is in vain, for his garrison is captured by Gylippus simultaneously.
